City Kids learns about Africa.

Every year in our in our World Cultures program, we do a unit on Africa, and today was a busy day. After our co-op lesson, we headed over to Sankofa, a local African bookstore and cafe, where we were met by a graduate student of the African Studies Department at Howard University. He talked to the kids about some of his travels in Africa, and he showed them his drum, made in Ghana, which he graciously let the kids play. Hands on Drums, a local store, community, and performance space, arranged for the drum to be made. (Hands on Drums is also where a few of our kids take drumming lessons!) Our guest speaker was generous with his time, and we were touched that Sankofa allowed us to have a talk there. We love our community!
